Aestas is the perfect garment for chilly summer nights or warm autumn days. Although it was originally designed as a cotton summer sweater, it’s also perfect for winter if you use sport weight wool or acrylic yarn! The simple and romantic eyelet lace pattern adds an interesting touch to this airy sweater. Aestas has a simple yet unique construction: it consists of two panels, a front and a back panel, which are worked flat and later seamed together. The sleeves are created by casting on stitches using the knitted cast on. The sleeve length is fully customizable and can easily be adjusted to your own preference.
This pattern includes instructions for sizes XS – 5XL and has been tested in sizes XS – 3XL. You can visit the Ravelry project page to see the tester projects. INSTRUCTIONS
Front and back
Cast on 97, (105, 121, 129) [145, 153, 169] (177, 185) stitches on 3.5mm needles using the long tail cast on.
Row 1 (WS): P all sts.
Work in stitch pattern until your piece measures approx. 40, (40, 38, 38) [38, 38, 38] (38, 36) cm or 15¾, (15¾, 15, 15) [15, 15, 15] (15, 14)” from the cast on edge, or desired length until armhole. Make sure you end on a row 8 or row 16 of the pattern repeat. You will have worked approx. 8½, (8½, 8, 8) [8, 8, 8] (8, 7½) pattern repeats.
Sleeves
Work row 1 or row 9 of the stitch pattern repeat (row 1 if you ended on row 16, row 9 if you ended on row 8). Cast on 96, (96, 104, 104) [104, 104, 104] (112, 112) sts for the sleeve using the knit cast on method when you’ve reached the end of your row.
You can alter the length of your sleeve by casting on more or less stitches here. Make sure you cast on a multiple of 8 sts, and check the final sleeve length by dividing the number of stitches you cast on by 2,3 for the sleeve length in cm or by 5,842 for the sleeve length in inches. Keep in mind that changing the sleeve length will affect the yardage. You should now have a total of 193, (201, 225, 233) [249, 257, 273] (289, 297) sts.
Work row 2 or row 10 of the stitch pattern repeat. Cast on 96, (96, 104, 104) [104, 104, 104] (112, 112) sts (or the same number of stitches you cast on before) for the other sleeve using the knit cast on method when you’ve reached the end of your row. You should now have a total of 289, (297, 329, 337) [353, 361, 377] (401, 409) sts.
Continue working in stitch pattern until your piece measures approx. 19, (19, 21, 21) [23½, 23½, 26] (26, 28) cm or 7½, (7½, 8¼, 8¼)[ 9¼, 9¼, 10¼](10¼, 11)” from the sts you cast on for the sleeves. Make sure you end on a row 8 or row 16 of the pattern repeat. You will have worked approx. 4, (4, 4½, 4½) [5, 5, 5½] (5½, 6) pattern repeats.
Work 2 more rows in stockinette stitch, ending on a WS row.
Loosely bind off all sts.
Assembling
Place the two pieces on top of each other. Close the side seams using the mattress stitch. Close the bottom part of the sleeves using an invisible horizontal seam. Close the top part of the sleeves using an invisible horizontal seam, leaving approx. 61, (61, 63, 65) [67, 67, 69] (71, 71) sts in the middle of both front and back unworked for the neckline. You will have a total of 2 x 61, (61, 63, 65) [67, 67, 69] (71, 71) sts for the neckline.
Finishing
You will now pick up stitches around the neckline, bottom and sleeves to work an i-cord along these edges.
Neckline
Pick up approx. 122, (122, 126, 130) [134, 134, 138] (142, 142) sts from the RS, starting mid back. Pick up 1 st in every st you left unworked for the neckline. Cast on 3 sts using the cable cast on method. Knit i-cord as follows:
*K2, k2tog through the back loop.*
Place the 3 sts on your right-hand needle back on the left-hand needle and repeat * * until you have bound off all sts. Use cast off tail to close i-cord seam.
Bottom
Pick up 1 st in every st of the cast on, cast on 3 sts using the cable cast on method and knit i-cord as described above.
Sleeves
Pick up approx. 86, (86, 96, 96) [106, 106, 116] (116, 128) sts on RS along bottom edge of sleeve (approx. 2 sts every 3 rows). Cast on 3 sts using the cable cast on method and knit I-cord as described above.
Weave in all ends and block sweater to size.
